BAREFOOT PLAYROOM
Nature Based Speech Therapy

What We Do
Barefoot Playroom is a nature-based speech
therapy practice serving children and their
families across the Philadelphia and its suburbs.
We use a child-led play based technique to work with late talkers, children on the autism spectrum, developmental delays, social communication differences, AAC, and speech sound disorders. Every session happens outside under a covered porch surrounded by a private garden in Wynnewood — because we believe the best therapy never looks like therapy at all.
And we follow the Scandinavian belief that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
Sessions happen outside year round, moving indoors only when a child needs it.

Why NATURE?
Research consistently shows that natural environments reduce stress, restore attention, and calm the nervous system in ways that a clinical environment cannot. A child who is dysregulated, anxious, or on guard cannot access language. A child who is calm and curious can.
For children on the autism spectrum, research shows that nature-based experiences are associated with meaningful improvements in sensory processing, social communication, attention, and reduced hyperactivity and irritability. For children with developmental differences, removing the pressure of a clinical setting and replacing it with a garden, a mud kitchen, and genuine play changes what children are able to do.
We also know that stress is one of the most significant barriers to communication. When children feel safe and unhurried, when no one is asking them to perform, language has room to emerge on its own terms. Nature creates that safety. Our garden is designed to deepen it.
We follow the Natural Language Acquisition framework, which understands that children develop communication through experience and connection. When a child is absorbed in something they love and turns to share that moment with you — that is where language lives. That is where we work.
Every session follows your child's lead.

How Nature
Supports
Speech & Language Goals
Nature is not just a calming backdrop — it is an active therapeutic tool.
A review of hundreds of peer-reviewed studies published in Frontiers in Psychology found what nature actually does for your child's communication:
-
Reduces stress — natural environments measurably reduce cortisol levels in children. Lower stress means more access to language
-
Improves attention — nature restores attention in children including those with ADHD, making them more available for communication and learning
-
Self-discipline — contact with nature improves impulse control and reduces hyperactivity
-
Motivation and engagement — children are significantly more motivated and engaged when learning happens in natural settings and this effect is strongest in children who struggle most in traditional settings
-
Loose parts — dirt, water, sticks, and stones as therapeutic tools promote creative self-directed play and development

Why This Matters for Your Child
If your child is:
-
A late talker or has delayed language development
-
Executive Function
-
On the autism spectrum
-
Gestalt Language Processor
-
Experiencing developmental delays
-
Struggling with social communication
-
Working on speech sounds
-
Anxious, sensory sensitive, or easily overwhelmed in clinical settings
Then nature-based speech therapy may be exactly what they need.
Outside, your child is not confined by walls or expectations. They are given space to move freely, follow their curiosity, and communicate in the way that feels most natural to them. Therapy feels like play.
And at Barefoot Playroom, that is entirely the point.
Your Role in Your
Child's Journey
You are with your child all day, every day — at breakfast, in the car, at the park, at bedtime. That means you are the most important part of their communication journey.
Language grows in the everyday moments that only you have access to. The walk to school. The bath. The book before bed. The time your child notices something and turns to you to share it.
Our job is to help you see those moments for what they are — and to trust what you already know about your child.
At Barefoot Playroom we believe in community and collaboration. This works best when we are doing it together.
This is a partnership.
